The Sandwich Creek Kayak Experience

When enjoying the beach on a hot, Cape Cod day, you can easily find at least one kayak, boogie-board, or the occasional parasail. While I love to go on adventures and enjoy the beach, I am not someone who typically looks for water sport activities on vacation.

However, when I found out that RideAway Adventures, a Cape business that offers kayak and stand-up paddle board rentals and tours, was located 5 minutes down the road from my East Sandwich beach rental, I knew I had to try it out. So naturally, I booked a kayak tour for me and my self-proclaimed unathletic older sister to really put RideAway to the test.

The Prep

Before the Sandwich Creek kayak adventure could begin, all tour members met at the Sandwich location to check-in with the tour guide and receive their life jackets. Each tour is limited at 6 people per tour guide, so your experience will never be over-crowded.

After making sure all five tour-goers were accounted for, our guide Cam directed us further down 6A to a dirt road by Sandwich Creek where the kayaks were waiting for us. He demonstrated how to properly use the paddles, helped us into our kayaks, and led us on our way down the marsh paths.

The Tour

Having only kayaked once in 2010, I was nervous that I would quite literally ride away with the current, or worse, tip over my kayak in front of everyone. However, it was so easy to get a hang of the motions, and with a skilled tour guide right by my side, I never felt unsafe. Even my sister who was worried about her lack of athletic skill was cruising down the creek in less than three minutes.

The two-hour outing lets you coast at your own pace, so our group was able to take in all of the wildlife that Sandwich Creek has to offer. From Osprey sightings to various Cape Cod plants, our guide shared fun facts and information about the area as we passed certain landmarks.

While I was prepared for the physical aspect of kayaking, I didn’t realize how peaceful the excursion would be. While floating at eye level with the beach grass, I was able to take in the sounds of the Cape and appreciate beachside nature in a way I never had before.

Whether you are an avid outdoorsman or a water-sport beginner, RideAway Adventures has something for all skillsets. With two locations, multiple tours, and even bike rental options, RideAway Adventures can take your Cape vacation to the next level. What Should I Bring?

Sunscreen

The tours can last anywhere from 1-2 hours, so you want to make sure skin enjoys the outing as much as you do. Make sure to lather up before arriving at RideAway for a smoother experience.

Bug Spray

While the location is beautiful, the marsh areas can get buggy. Your guide might have bug spray to offer, but it’s always a good idea to apply a nice layer before your tour.

Sunglasses

The easiest way to enjoy RideAway is to wear a pair of sunglasses. While it seems small, it can make a huge difference in your experience.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

With Osprey nests and beautiful Cape landscapes all around, it’s almost necessary to take a photo to commemorate your experience. Bringing a waterproof phone pouch or a sealable Ziploc bag can help prevent any cell phone fiascos while on the water.

Towel

You won’t need the towel while on the tour, but it’s definitely a good idea to keep one in your car for after the adventure. A few drops of water are bound to drip on you from the paddles and the dismount area at the end of the tour is a bit muddy, so this will make sure that your car doesn’t look or smell like the marsh after your experience.
